However, it can be said that from the 4th and 5th centuries onwards, Islamic and European travel writers have reported its greatness and prosperity.

The History of Tabriz Bazaar

Tabriz has always been an important commercial center because it was located on the silk trade route and many trade caravans passed through it. This importance doubled when Tabriz was chosen as the capital. During the time of Ilkhanates and the prosperity of Tabriz, business trips to the bazaar increased, following that period, Tabriz became the place of trade for Venetian and Austrian merchants during the rule of the Turkmens In the Safavid period. Frequent wars with the Ottoman government overshadowed the city foreign trades despite Tabriz prosperity. The last boom period of Tabriz market is related to Qajar dynasty. This is because Tabriz was the residence of the crown prince; European ambassadors and merchants frequently stayed in Tabriz and traded in the market. Since Qajar era, the market has maintained its prosperity.

Different Sections of Tabriz Bazaar

Bazaar is the beating heart of Islamic cities and Tabriz Bazaar is an excellent example of it. This market is literally a special place for foreign trades, the proof of which is the existence of various amenities to facilitate trade. In addition to the main bazaar building, there are approximately 37 marketplaces and 28 timches, each dedicated to a profession. In addition to this economic section, a recreational section was built as a caravanserai so that traders, their cattle and their companions can rest; schools, mosques and public bathhouses are other available facilities. The marketplace of carpets, shoe sellers and mirror makers are among the most famous parts of Tabriz bazaar.

Our Knowledge About its Architecture

Tabriz market is an attractive example of magnificent Iranian architecture. With an area of about 100 hectares, this beautiful bazaar has a width of 4-5 meters and a height of 5-6 meters; the roof of Tabriz market is made of brick domes with openings in it. In addition to providing mild light, these openings also perform the function of ventilation.

The old structure of Tabriz market was destroyed by the earthquake; the structure that we see today belongs to late Zendiyeh and early Qajar periods. The design of this market is considered a unique engineering. The use of highly-thick brick walls makes this market thermally insulated; as a result, it does not get cold inside the market in the cold seasons. The symmetry of the whole bazaar, the roof muqarnas, the extraordinary color combination of the bricks, the three floors of the bazaar, the presence of more than 5500 shops, the same architecture of the bazaars despite the difference in pattern, etc. are among the unique characteristics of Tabriz Historical Bazaar Complex.
