Ghaffariyeh Dome

As one of the brilliant ages of Iranian architecture, Ilkhanid period includes many noticeable works, one of which is located in the original capital of Ilkhanate, Maragheh: a four-cornered building with Islamic decorations and design that adorns the city of Maragheh (the city of domes) in East Azarbaijan province. In addition, this dome is one of the five domes of Maragheh city. Let's get to know Ghaffariyeh Dome more.

Name and History of the Building

The construction of the building dates back to about 7 centuries ago. This dome was built by the order of Sultan Abu Saeed Ilkhani to function as a tomb.Due to the importance of the work facade in this style of architecture, 3 years of the dome construction were dedicated to its decorations.

Historical narratives do not provide correct information about the buried person; even the common name of the dome at the time of Ilkhans is unclear. However, its current name (Ghafariyeh) goes back to the time of Ag Qoyunlu, a dynasty that paid tribute to mystics, so the building was named after Nizamuddin Ghafari when he dedicated the surrounding properties and gardens to the dome area.

The Architecture of Ghaffariyeh Dome

As mentioned, the architectural style goes back to the Ilkhanid period. Four corners of the main building, the use of bricks, turquoise tiles, muqarnas work and inscriptions above the altar along with the entrance to the dome, etc. are considered among the special rare charms of Ghaffariyeh Dome in Maragheh. The city of Maragheh is one of the tourist cities in Iran with many amenities and historical monuments.

Maragheh is the socializing city of Mongols. A trip to the middle history of Iran!!!
