Prison of Solomon

Mountain, prison, fire temple, lake, place of worship, Prophet Solomon; these are all different names of a mysterious place three kilometers west of Takht-e Soleyman in West Azarbaijan, a phenomenon that bears the burden of legend. This mountain (nowadays known as Prison of Solomon) is 110 meters high with a 76-meter pit having a diameter of 64 meters. A round and ruined tower can be seen around it.

The Formation of Solomon Prison Mountain

The research related to Solomon's Prison has been conducted with the great help of German archaeologists, including Professor Wolfram Kleiss. Through their findings, they came to the conclusion that the mountain itself was formed due to the calcareous sediments of the lake water inside (Mesozoic period), later the water flowed out due to the crack on the walls, and today it is empty of water.

The Human Use of Solomon Prison

The greatest legend left from historical sources, which is based on historical ignorance, is a story about the imprisoning of goblins and outlaw demons by Prophet Solomon in this deep pit. The reports of the Urartian and Assyrian tribes indicated that this place and the fence around the pit were considered a place of worship for the Mannaea tribe. After that, we have no sources, and then due to the proximity of Solomon Prison to Takht-e-Suleiman, there were theories about the connection between the two. Today, after extensive research on archeological sources and excavations, it has been determined that the Sassanians used it as a fire temple and a place for sacrifice. Before the destruction, the building around the pit was in the form of a room and was only used for religious purposes.

Prison of demons?? Or a place of worship??? Anyway, Prison of Solomon is spectacular !!!
