Jameh Mosque of Urmia

After Islam conquered the Zoroastrian and Christian lands, instead of destroying fire temples and churches, Muslims converted these holy places to mosques. One of the most beautiful supreme examples of this change is Jameh Mosque of Urmia in West Azarbaijan province.

What Happened to Jameh Mosque of Urmia?

The sources of ancient Iranian history do not have any clue about the construction time of this place. Examining Islamic history books also does not give any information about the time of its construction. Researchers believe that the fire temple was converted into a mosque during the Al-Buyeh or Seljuk period. Of course, the building of the current mosque was built by Ilkhanates in the 7th century AH; an incredibly beautiful mosque that represents the acme of Ilkhan architecture will amaze its visitors. According to documents, the mosque building was restored during the Safavid and Zandiya periods.

The Amazing Art Used in Jameh Mosque of Urmia and its Special Features

Mosque and bazaar are two inseparable elements in Islamic architecture. For this reason, Jame Mosque is connected to Urmia Bazaar by two entrances. The inner hall of the mosque, which is known as Chehel Sotoun (forty columns) (actually 18 columns), is the most enchanting part of it. Shabestan (prauing hall) also has beautiful brick work and moqarans work, with the altar at the end; the plastering of the altar is certainly considered as one of the best examples of plastering throughout the Islamic world. The artistic decorations on the columns with Kufic script, painted arches, squinches of the forty-pillared hall, the construction of numerous arches in shabestan, 46-meter height of the building, etc. are all parts of the wonderful features of the Jame mosque of Urmia.
