Farhad Crypt

Mixed with romantic legend and history, Farhad Crypt takes us to the depths of time. This crypt, believed by historians and archaeologists to be 2700 to 3000 years old, is located at a distance of 9 km from Sarsang village in Mako city (West Azarbaijan province).

Who Made Farhad Crypt?

Due to the lack of knowledge about their ancient history, the people living in Iran used to attribute historical monuments to myths and legends, an outlook that can be seen in the naming of Persepolis, Takht-e Soleyman, Tomb of Cyrus the Great, and etc. Consequently, they considered this crypt to be related to the famous lover of Iranian stories, Farhad the Rock Cutter. However, today with the advancement of science and technology, we know that Farhad crypt was built in 2700 to 3000 years ago (the years leading to the formation of the Medes' government) by the Urartian tribes (Northwestern Iran)

Some Extraordinary Features of Farhad Crypt

Its first obvious and strange feature is the carving of about 20 meters in the heart of the mountain in a very smooth and polished form, which shows the skill of the Urartian rock carvers thousand years ago. The crypt has an entrance door and 2 chambers that do not have any light sources, so torches seem to have been used for lighting. Another interesting point is that the entrance door is covered by the trees in front of the crypt in the green seasons of the year. So, if you don't have a guide, it will be very difficult to find the crypt. Although the function of this crypt is still unclear; researchers speculate it to be used as the place to worship Urartian God, the cemetery and the house.

The Urartians were mountain tribes. Be sure to visit this crypt to go deep into history !!!
