Bahram-e Choobin Gorge

Bahram-e Choobin Gorge or Choobineh Fort, one of the beautiful natural phenomena of Darrehshahr city, includes structures unique in their kind.

Bahram Choobin Gorge is a narrow high gorge with a strategic position on the slopes of Kabirkuh adjacent to the village of Sheikhmakan on the western side of the Darrehshahr-Poldakhtar road. This gorge with the remains of walls and military fortresses attributed to Bahram Choobin (one of the generals of the Sassanid period) is a resort for tourists; according to a narration, this goege was the shelter of Bahram Choobin during the revolt against Khosro Parviz. "Bahram Mehran" known as Bahram Choobin is one of the national heroes of Iran during the Sassanid era. Born in Raga, he was from the aristocratic family of Mehran; during the Sassanid era, the best officers of the Iranian army came from the Mehran family. At that time, Iran was divided into four super-provinces, each of which was called “quarters”. He is a well-reputed Iranian patriot who has proved his loyalty. Some historians believe that the Samanid dynasty that revived Persian culture and language descended from Bahram Choobin. Therefore, we can name Bahram Choobin Gorge as one of the wonderful attractions and natural masterpieces in Darreh shahr city in Ilam province.

The gorge, which was considered the refuge of Bahram Choobin in ancient times, was an important military and recreational refuge that Bahram went to for fun and hunting. Bahram Choobin, named Bahram VI, son of Bahram Goshnasb from the Mehran family, was one of the superior Sassanid families. On holidays, many tourists from Ilam and other parts of the country come to visit this beautiful region. Bahram-e Choobin Gorge has been registered on the list of national monuments of the country; nevertheless, it is not paid attention to by the officials and no effort is made to preserve the heritage of the famous Iranian commander.
