Tomb of Yaghub Leys Saffari

The tomb of Yaghoub leys Saffari is located in Shahabad village, between Dezful and Shushtar in Khuzestan province. Experts believe that the oldest parts of this building, which is located among the remains of the ancient city of Jundishapur, belong to the Seljuk period; remains of the Qajar period can also be seen in this building.

The main materials of this building are raw clay, gypsum mortar and soil. The mausoleum consists of Chahar Taqi (four arches) with a serrated conical dome; the dome of Yaghub Leys tomb is one of the most magnificent conical domes in Khuzestan province. This building, which was registered on the list of national monuments of Iran on the 8th of December 1999, has been reconstructed and restored several times so far.

Different theories attribute this historical tomb to Yaghub Leys Saffari; however, the indigenous people of the region regard this as the tomb of Prince Abolghasem. Yaghub Leys Saffari or Radmanpour Mahak is a famous Iranian general and the founder of the Saffarid dynasty in Iran. Yaghub went to the capital of the Abbasid rulers in 261 AH with a large army to conquer Baghdad, but he was defeated by the Abbasid forces and was forced to retreat. After this defeat, while he had started to equip other forces, he became ill and later died of colic. Scholars such as Nikola Rast consider the tomb to be the burial place of Yaghub Leys Saffari, citing an inscription that no longer exists.

On this inscription that was once on the wall of the tomb, the name of Yaghub Leys was written in Arabic script; nonetheless, others, asserting that the tomb of Yaghub Leys Saffari was somewhere among the remains of Jundishapur, do not consider this reason sufficient for attributing this tomb to him. They believe that the mere existence of an inscription in the building (due to the fact that there is no information about its full text) is not a conclusive reason to attribute this building to Yaghub Leys Saffari; this inscription is likely to have been transferred from another place in the vicinity and placed on the wall of the tomb.
