Chal Nakhjir Cave

Have you ever seen a 60 million year old creature? Chal Nakhjir Cave in Markazi province is a living cave from the Paleocene era, which still continues to grow as it is quickly restored and repaired if a crack occurs in its limestone structure. More than 96% of the cave is limestone and the rest is stone.

What Do We See in the Cave?

Chal Nakhjir cave has different sights; From the limestone structure in the shapes of lion, eagle, turtle, deer, man, pigeon and big crystal columns to flooring and lighting that create a range of various colors and beauty by passing through limestone prisms and by reflecting and refracting light. The cave consists of several halls which are named according to the shape of the sediments inside: Bride - zoo - forty columns – candelabrum. The cave is full of crystal sponges, prismatic structures, coral gardens, halls, corridors and numerous ponds. According to the discoveries that have been made so far, the cave has three floors and its height reaches 40meters in some places. So far, about 4km out of the 9km of the cave depth has been discovered.

The Way to the Cave

The cave is located 8 kilometers east of the city of Delijan. To reach the cave, you have to travel 8km on the Delijan-Naraq road and then move 3km to the north to reach the foothills of Takht Mountain. Chal Nakhjir Cave is located in this mountain.
