Abasabad garden

Historical Abbas Abad garden is located in the 9th km from Behshahr city in Mazandaran province. It is situated in the forest slopes of Alborz mountain range.

This complex includes a reservoir dam made of mortar, with a capacity of six hundred thousand cubic meters, which is known as Abbas Abad Dam, and a lake dam in the middle of which the main building is located, a garden, a bath, a water mill and two brick towers for protection and surveillance of the collection. When Safavid king, Shah Abbas, in1611, in the area then called "Khargooran", ordered the construction of this complex. Shah Abbas ordered to build the complex, which he called "Ashraf al-Balad" (the best land). His order led to the construction of a garden that is today the most important and valuable non-desert garden in Iran.
The most famous and valuable building of Abbasabad complex is a four-room brick structure called Kushk (pavilion). Abbas Abad Garden Pavilion is located in the middle of the lake. Abbas Abad Lake has had an area of more than 10 hectares, which at the time of water rise reaches a height of 18 hectares. Currently, the only part of this work that remains is the lower floor. According to experts and researchers, there was a room with wooden materials for the Safavid kings to rest in, on the Abbasabad Garden Pavilion, which is no longer visible today. The mansion between the lakes was probably originally built to reinforce the dam and it was later used for recreational use.
When the water of the lake rises, the whole structure goes under water and only the plants that have grown from its roof appear as an island in the middle of the lake. But if the water level is low, you can see the pavilion that has a pair of arches on all four sides.

The architecture and structure of Abbas Abad Garden:

The architecture of Abbas Abad Garden is completely symmetrical, which makes it beautiful.
The constituent parts of Abbas Abad garden include bath, dam, palace, greenhouse, Golbagh (flower garden), brick tower, water mill.

Abbas Abad Garden Bath and Sudatorium

Abbasabad complex also had a bathroom. Bathroom with one hundred and sixty square meters of infrastructure on the west side of the garden. What you should know about this bath is that the Safavid kings also used hot water when using this bath. The presence of a Sudatorium in this bath has made it one of the buildings with special and unique technology in the Safavid era.
In 2011, UNESCO registered a collection of 9 Iranian gardens. The name "Abbasabad Garden of Behshahr" as the only Iranian garden in the northern half of the country is in World Heritage List.

Abbas Abad Water Mill

The mill is located approximately 5 km south of the garden between two rivers full of water. The main materials of the superstructure are brick and mortar. Access to the mill is possible through a paved road. About the operation of the building we can say that the water is directed to the open brick channel through the covered channel, then it moves towards the mill wheel with an almost suitable slope and it causes the wheel blades to move. Safavid engineers, by constructing a water mill in the desired location, have used the most of water energy to move the mill cycles.

Abbas Abad flower garden

The area of Golbagh ( flower garden) is about 3500 square meters and according to the architectural remains of the tower of Golbagh (flower garden) area in the Safavid period, due to its importance in water supply, it has been protected by guards.

Abbas Abad brick made tower

In this area, there are two brick towers with a diameter of 7 meters and a height of 14 meters from the Safavid era. The main materials of these towers are mortar and brick. Considering the structure of the two buildings of the tower, which are located on the water supply axis, it can be said that the towers do not have a purely guarding function, and due to the difference in height of Golbagh area compared to the garden, the two towers were actually considered by Safavid engineers to prevent fluid impact.
