Darioon Creek

The most important component of the power structure and society throughout the history of Iran has been water. Supplying and managing the distribution of this important liquid has always been the main concern of Iranian governments from thousands of years ago until today.

For this reason, water control and distribution structures can be seen in different parts of this country. One of the most famous of them is the Shushtar Historical Hydraulic System, in this article we are going to talk about one of its important parts called Darioon Creek.

Without wasting time, let's go and check it.

Nomenclature and history of Darioon creek:

Karun river is divided into several parts on its way. Darioon river located in Shushtar is one of the branches of this river. According to the reports of Islamic historians and especially geographers, this stream was dug by Darius the Great (Achaemenid Emperor) to irrigate the agricultural lands around Shushtar. For this reason, they put Darioon on it. *Darioon* is the Greek name of *Darius*.

This 40-kilometer creek, with its catchments and precise engineering, irrigates the surrounding lands and some rural areas even today. Different parts of the creek have passed underground to be safe from the heat of the sun and evaporation. The underground part has recently been dredged by the government and most of it has been bricked to prevent wastage of water. The Darioon Creek, along with many other large and small structures, is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the name Shushtar Historical Hydraulic System.
