Khorheh Temple

Among the dynasties of ancient Iran, the Parthians and Seleucids have fewer sites than the Sasanians and Achaemenids, with very limited number in Iran. One of them, which some attribute to the Seleucid era and others to the Parthian era, is Khorheh Temple in Markazi province. Let's take a look at the hidden history of Iran.

Where is Khorheh Temple?

This temple is located 9 kilometers north-east of Mahalat city (between Yakhchal and Haftad Gholle mountains) in Markazi province near Khorheh village. You need to drive from Mahalat to Abgarm and then the road to Khorehe village which is 20 kilometers long. The mentioned temple has an area of less than half a hectare (about 4200 square meters).

The Importance of Khorheh Temple

As mentioned, this building is one of the few remaining sites of Seleucid-Parthian architecture (4th century BC to 2nd AD). From the archeological excavations, the temple appears to have had 12 columns, but now 2 columns are standing, which shows extensive destruction. The building can be divided into 3 parts: summer palace, workshop area and cemetery. In these 3 sections, Antiquities from different periods such as Seleucids, Parthians, Abbasid Caliphate, Seljuks and Ilkhanates have been discovered, which adds to the importance of Khorheh Temple. Perhaps the most important and interesting architectural feature of this 2000-year-old building is not using any mortar to connect the materials, which shows the skill and mastery of the architects.

A journey into the heart of 600 years of Iran's dark history. A combination of Iranian and Greek architecture that reminds you of Persepolis !!!
