Kandovan Village

Kandovan Village is located in the city of Osko in East Azerbaijan, which has a cold climate, so locals spend 180 days of year in icy conditions.

Kandovan is located in the northwestern part of Sahand Mountain, which has played a great role in its formation. Kandovan village is one of the three rocky villages in the world and the only village among these three villages where people have been living for a long time. The sharp pointed masses of Kandovan, which have holes in their irregular surfaces, are formed by volcanic eruptions; these masses, which are like beehive cells, are also called “Karan”.

History of Kandovan Village

Kandovan Village is one of the most famous and amazing natural attractions of East Azerbaijan and Iran, with a world-wide reputation because Kandovan Village is the only rocky village in the world that is still inhabited. In addition to Kandovan Village, there are two other rocky villages around the world, one of which is in Cappadocia in Turkey, and the other is in Dakota in USA. Kandovan Village in Tabriz has cold and long winters, so it has the role of a suitable shelter against the cold and heat, as well as the influx of strangers. Most of the rooms here have two floors and in some cases three or even four floors; they are not connected to each other from the inside.

The Village of Kandovan is made up of rocks; people later built their own houses to live in by digging into the rocks. Hundreds of barns and rooms have been dug in the heart of the high hills of Kandovan, sometimes reaching a height of 40 meters; the villagers have built their own houses, warehouses and work places within these masses. The multi-storey houses of the village are generally connected by a staircase with narrow alleys that have a steep slope; the architecture of rural houses in Kandovan is in the form of conical rocks. The village has a mosque, bathhouse, school and mill; the mosque section is one of the largest sections of the village. In addition to the architecture of Kandovan Village, which is very special and unique, mineral water springs that are suitable for the treatment of kidney diseases can be considered as the features of this village. Green and beautiful valleys, mild climate, dairy, high-quality mountain honey and handicrafts have made this region one of the tourist attractions of Iran. One of its most prominent features of Kandovan Village is that it is located in one of the pleasant climate regions of Iran and East Azerbaijan. According to some archaeologists, the village of Kandovan dates back to pre-Islamic times. Kandovan Village has been designated on the list of national monuments of Iran on May 6, 1997.
