Babak Castle is located near the city of Kaleybar, 50 km north of Ahar city and about 200 km from Tabriz in East Azarbaijan province. Located in Arasbaran region, this fort has been the place where Babak Khorramdin, one of the most famous Iranian commanders, lived and battled for a period of 20 years. Through this ancient fortress, he and his companions were able to make the Arab armies wander in the mountains for twenty years, ambush them and cause them to flee.

History of Babak Castle

The location of this building at the top of the mountain had enabled a corps with just 20 people to withstand the aggression and attack of a 100,000-strong corps because the distance did not allow the arrows, bows and weapons of that time to harm the guards and soldiers of the castle. This indicates its constructor’s military genius, awareness and tact. This strategic position of the fort and its difficult route for the enemy forces were among the factors that helped Babak Khorramdin in organizing the battles and fortifications in this place. There are many stories and legends about the life and death of Babak Khorramdin. Despite much research on him and his activities, no single result has been achieved yet.

The only way to enter the castle is through the main gate; after passing through the gate and fortifications, you have to pass through a narrow passage, which is a 100-meter sloping path to the summit. Then you will reach the entrance of the castle. On the four sides of the castle and on the natural supports of the mountain walls, there are four semi-cylindrical watchtowers where the soldiers could be stationed to monitor miles away. Entering the main fort requires passing another entrance with irregular stairs, on either side of which are two pseudo columns. The castle building is located after the entrance and existed in two and three floors. There are seven rooms near the main hall that lead to the central hall. In the eastern part of the castle, there are facilities including rooms and reservoirs. Interestingly, the roof of the reservoirs is made of gabled and barrel arches, and their inner area is made impermeable with a kind of mortar so that it can be filled with snow and rain in winter. In the northwest of the castle, there were stairs that are now ruined and they were the only way to climb the higher parts.

There is little information about Babak Khorramdin's birthplace; however, its birth seems to date back to more than 1200 years ago. According to some narrations, in his youth, he became the deputy head of the Khoramian group and took over the leadership of the group. The Khorramians, also known as the Sorkh(red) Jamgans or Khorramdinans, fought against the Abbasid caliphs. Babak and his group, whose main place of activity was Babak Fortress, were engaged in opposition and struggle against the Abbasid caliphs for more than 20 years and were able to dominate a large part of Azerbaijan. Babak was finally defeated in a battle with Sardar Afshin in 216 and was eventually arrested.
