Rudkhan Castle

Rudkhan Castle is located about 20 km southwest of Fooman in Gilan province.

This fort is one of the most important military forts in Iran, which is built in the heart of a beautiful and impassable forest. This location of the castle has made it invincible throughout history. The castle has an area of about 2.6 hectares and has 65 towers and fortifications. Rudkhan Castle is considered to be the largest brick castle in Iran.
The castle wall is 1500 meters long. Some attribute the castle to the Sassanid era and others to the Seljuks. This castle consists of two parts, the citadel and the tomb; The citadel was the site of the royal castle, shrine, and Qorkhaneh, where military activities and soldiers lived. Since the castle is built on two peaks, it is divided into three parts: western, middle and eastern. The western part includes the crypt, the royal, residential units, and so on. The middle part includes the low height and the main gate, and the western part is includes the military parts of the building. Inside the walls and watchtowers, there are sloping openings that were used to pour molten material and fire. This stone and brick building, in which the traces of a brick kiln can also be seen, was built with gypsum mortar, mortar, lime and ash. Rudkhan Castle in Gilan Province remained unknown until 1830, when it was discovered by Polish scholar Alexander Schudzko-Khcheko.

Rudkhan Castle is also known as Rudkhan Fortress, Roodgan Fortress, Hesami Castle and Sagsal Castle. Another name that has been used for this castle is Hezar Pele(thousand stairs) Castle, which is due to the large number of stairs in Rudkhan Castle. Archaeologists have unearthed 935 steps in the castle. This feature is one of the unique wonders of this castle. In addition to the stairs, today, for the welfare of tourists, stairs have been added to the building so that visitors can more easily see this beautiful and magnificent castle. In total, the number of stairs in Rudkhan Castle is about 1600 steps.
