Darband Rashi Cave
The oldest documented human settlement in Iran and one of the oldest in the world is Darband Rashi Cave, or more correctly, "Darband Rashi Caves ".
Two caves that have a history of 200 thousand years of human life. Rashi caves include the big cave (Kovilgar - 60 meters long) and the small cave (Jokovileh - 30 meters long).They are located in the north of Iran in Gilan province on the shore of the Caspian Sea. Around the cave, you will see a unique view of green plains, tree-covered rocks and Rashi village, which will undoubtedly enchant you.
History of caves:
As you know, man was able to use hand-made stone tools in the Paleolithic period; however, these stones often lack the refinements and carvings of the Neolithic period.In 2005, Dr. Vali Jahani (Iranian archaeologist) took the first step in researching this settlement by examining a smaller cave and discovering a number of pottery belonging to the first millennium BC.In the same year, in the second cave, the remains of pottery similar to the first cave made these two caves be on Iran National Heritage List.Since then, several groups of archaeologists have explored the inner and outer environment of the cave and found artifacts such as the main stone, carved stone, a large stone knife similar to a cleaver, fossils and remains of animal bones and etc.By examining these works, scientists have estimated that hunter-gatherers may have lived in this place for about 12,000 years although the human species lived in Darband Rashi Cave until 200,000 years ago.
