Ilam Gavmishan Bridge

Ilam Gavmishan Bridge

Ilam Gavmishan Bridge is one of the most famous and largest historical bridges in Iran; according to some archaeologists, this bridge is an ancient engineering feat. This bridge is located on the border between Lorestan and Ilam provinces, 15 km from Dare shahr.

Gavmishan Bridge is 24 meters high and 175 meters long. Gavmishan Bridge has six arches now; one of the arches of the bridge was destroyed after the retreat of the Iranian army in the war with the Arab armies in order to prevent the enemy advancement. Its main arch with a width of more than 31 meters is one of the architectural masterpieces, so it is considered the largest architectural bridge arch of the ancient world. In the construction of this structure, which is one of the most famous attractions of Ilam province, bricks, rubble, stone blocks and gypsum mortar have been used; Ilam Gavmishan Bridge is a complex technical bridge with round thick stone foundations and brick arches. According to the existing evidence, it can be said that this bridge was both used as a communication medium and a shelter. The exact construction year of the Gavmishan Bridge is not known, but it is quite clear that it belongs to the Sassanid period and was later restored. According to various theories, the name of Ilam Gavmishan Bridge is derived from Gomishe, the place where cattle are raised. There are also narrations according to which the male buffalo lost its mate in ancient times; after going through all the valleys and caves, the buffalo finally found his mate in a cave in this area, henceforth this area was called Gav (cow) Mishu. There may be a possibility that due to the importance of the cow in Mithraism, this name may be derived from this old tradition.
