Agha Bozorg Mosque and School

Agha Bzorg Mosque and School is one of the most magnificent and beautiful mosques of Qajar dynasty in Iran, registered as a national heritage in 1951.

As one of the most beautiful Islamic buildings, this complex is an example of traditional Iranian architecture, suitable for the desert climate. This mosque, with three shabestans (prayer halls), was built by Haj Mohammad Taghi Khanban in honor of his son-in-law, the late Mullah Mohammad Mehdi Naraghi known as Agha Bozorg as a theological school.

This magnificent building, which is the last great building built during the decline of Iranian architecture and art, was built by an architect named Ustad (master) Shaban Ali. The arts of tiling, plastering, inscriptions, moqarnas and painting are among the decorations of this great building. The inscriptions of the mosque have been written by prominent masters of calligraphy of Kashan, including Mohammad Ibrahim, Mohammad Hossein. For instance, there is an inscription above the entrance with a tax exemption order by Mohammad Shah Qajar.

This mosque has a beautiful entrance, the ceiling of which is decorated with hanging moqarnas of plaster and paintings; the walls of the front house, stretching from the inscription above the entrance to the floor, are covered with colorful brick tiles. The greatness of the building, its excellent design, unique plan, especially the original Iranian architectural techniques used in it, its magnificent dome and court has caused this building to be considered as one of the most important Iranian-Islamic buildings.

The architecture of Kashan Agha Bozorg Mosque and School

After entering the school grounds in Agha Bozorg complex, you come across the unique courtyards, the rooms for the students' residence, the magnificent brick dome and minarets on both sides. Four stone stairs in four corners of the courtyard connect the sunken courtyard to the upper courtyard, and another series of stairs lead to the cellar; Sometimes the temperature difference between the cellar and the upper yard reaches 20 to 25 degrees Celsius. This mosque has also windcatchers, the Persian architectural genius, in order to ventilate the air.

In addition to these two backyards, this architectural masterpiece encompasses a large reservoir, another Shabestan (prayer hall) behind the dome, a mosque building next to the dome and a tiled altar decorated with plastering, inscriptions, Mogharnas and painting. The school rooms are built about one step higher than the level of the lower yard (sunken court yard).
