Shafei Jameh Mosque

A reflection of the Ottoman mosques and the Golden Age of Islam in Egypt, a reflection of the acme of Iranian-Islamic art and architecture, and a colorful building with a combination of tradition and modernism; all these lead us to the Jameh Mosque of Shafei in Kermanshah (for Sunni Muslims of Iran).

A newly built mosque with a life of less than 100 years and an area of more than 1000 square meters is located in the heart of Kermanshah city in the west of Iran.

Where is Jameh Mosque of Shafei?

As mentioned, the mosque is located in the center of Kermanshah in the west of Iran. According to the tradition of authentic Iranian urban planning, which is based on the connection of the market and the mosque as two pillars of the social life of Iranians, the Mosque of Shafei was built adjacent to the Kermanshah market, located on Javanshir Blvd. The mosque is well recognizable with its 5 domes and 3 tall minarets.

When and How was Shafei Mosque Built?

Shafei is one of the four Sunni sects, along with Maliki, Hanbali and Hanafi, which has many followers in a number of Iranian provinces, including Kermanshah; consequently, this mosque was built in 1324 AH with the efforts of several Shia and Sunni scholars and benefactors such as Seyyed Ali Naqshbandi, Mohammad Saleh Mohammadi, Jafar Sharifi and Mirza Habib Bolandi in the center of Kermanshah city adjacent to the Kermanshah market. Today, daily prayers are performed here.

The Architectural Structure of the Jameh Mosque of Shafei

Unlike the Shia mosques all over Iran, this mosque is completely similar to the Sunni mosques of the Islamic world. The characteristics of Sunni mosques include a full dome in the middle and a number of half domes around it, tughra lines on the unique plastering of the inner area, thick calligraphic columns, muqarnas work and dome constructions of the western world of Islam. In the architecture of Shia mosques, the columns go up to the highest point close to the ceiling, with the arch built on top; in contrast, in Sunni mosque architecture, the column is raised to half the height and then the arch is built on. This difference can be seen well in the Shafei mosque. This mosque has a library, male and female shabestans, a pond and a courtyard (characteristics of ancient Iranian architecture) and three 9-meter minarets.

You no longer need to travel to Turkey to visit Ottoman architecture. Jameh Mosque of Shafei in Kermanshah, with an exceptional combination of Iranian-Ottoman-Islamic architecture is ready to welcome you in Iran!!!
