Malek Zuzan Mosque in Khaf
Malek Zuzan Mosque is located in Zuzan Plain, near the current border between Iran and Afghanistan, which was once a populated and famous area.
Zuzan Mosque is constructed in the style of two-iwan mosques, with brick and tile inscriptions that can be seen on iwans, especially the south iwan. Zuzan Mosque, along with Gonabad and Faroumad mosques, are among the first buildings in which a mixture of turquoise tiles with bricks can be seen; for instance, the south porch of Malek Zuzan Mosque, a pulpit with turquoise bricks and tiles and very interesting designs can be seen. According to the inscription obtained from this mosque in recent years, the construction year of Zuzan Mosque was determined to be 1204; this mosque was built by King Ghavamuddin Zuzani. Although this mosque is falling into ruins, what has remained from its porches and decorations show the greatness of the building in the past. French architect and archaeologist Andre Godard believes that the mosque is half-finished due to the lack of decorations on the altar; lack of completion of the ground surface and the existence of not attached bricks in this building reinforce his theory. Some scholars, citing the latest inscription discovered from the building, believe that the construction of the building probably did not continue due to the Mongol invasion.
