The castle of "Falak al-Aflak" or Shapur Khast fortress is one of the architectural masterpieces of the world, which was built in the city of Khorramabad during the Sassanid period.

In the past, there were two courtyards and twelve towers inside this castle, today only eight of them have survived. The castle of Falak al-Aflak has become the symbol of the city of Khorramabad. The word Falak al-Aflak means the sepehr of Sepehran, and due to having twelve towers, we can refer to the twelve constellations, and the name of Falak al-Aflak also derives from here.This historic castle, located on a hill overlooking the city of Khorramabad, has eight towers and two rectangular courtyards; The height of the tallest wall of this huge castle up to the level of the hill is 23 meters, its total area is five thousand and 300 square meters and the building plan of this historical castle is irregular octagonal. Falak Al-Aflak Castle is built on a 40-meter hill and as we mentioned before, it is one of the best castles in Iran in terms of location. In addition, the architecture of this building is unique in its kind. The complex, which currently consists of several sections, has various secret passages, numerous underground spaces, 8 tall towers, 2 courtyards and 300 towers, each of which has been built according to architectural principles. In addition, it is not bad to know that this beautiful castle is decorated with plastering, brickwork and tiles.

Another thing that you should know about the architecture of Falak va Al-Aflak Castle is that this castle is more than 5300 square meters and the height of its tallest wall is 23 meters, it should also be mentioned that the plan of this complex is an irregular octagonal with a rectangular pattern.
As we mentioned before, Falak al-Aflak Citadel has different parts nowadays, some of which are the castle towers, the first courtyard, the castle well, the old bath, the second courtyard, the museum of Falak al-Aflak, etc.

History of Falk al-Aflak castle

The magnificent building of this castle belongs to the Sassanid period, it was once used as a prison for Roman captives and in the fourth century was chosen as the seat of government, then became the ruling treasury of Lorestan and due to its beautiful architecture is one of the engineering and architectural known masterpieces in the of the world. The tallest wall in this castle is 33 meters and has an irregular octagonal plan. Falak al-Aflak Castle was rebuilt during the Qajar period and was used as a military barracks and political prison during the Pahlavi era. Eventually, in 1349, Falak al-Aflak was registered in the national monuments of Iran and became a valuable museum. In recent years, the exterior and interior of the castle have been renovated and archeological museums, anthropology, a restoration laboratory and a traditional teahouse have been added.The castle of Falak al-Aflak has had various names such as Shapurkhast fortress, Khorramabad castle, Atabakan palace, twelve towers, but since the Qajar period, it has taken the name of Falak al-Aflak.

Falak al-Aflak World registration 

On 10 October 1348 AH, Falak al-Aflak castle was registered in the list of national monuments of Iran. Before this date, this ancient castle had various uses and due to its very convenient and strategic location, it has always been considered by different governments.
