Modavvar Dome

The city of Maragheh is known as the city of 5 tomb towers. One of these tombs, which shows the sublime Iranian-Islamic architecture and the art of the Seljuk era, is Modavvar Dome(Modavvar Tower).

According to the inscriptions inside, this building dates back to the year 653 AH; similar to other 4 domes, it is located on a stone slab containing a cellar. Interestingly, there is no information about the person buried in the dome.

Features of the Modavvar Dome

According to the historians of the Seljuk court and also the local historians of Tabriz, Modavvar tower had a double-shell dome; however, today there is no trace left. They seem to have been destroyed over time due to earthquakes in the region, and today a flat roof has been replaced. Like other buildings of the Seljuk era, the portal of the dome is a crescent-shaped arch in a rectangular frame, with inscriptions decorated with turquoise tiles on the upper and lower parts. The motifs and works on the wall and arch of the tower are symmetrical and intricately designed with a combination of intertwining geometric lines.

Due to the cold weather in the northwestern regions of Iran, materials such as brick, clay, and mortar were used in the construction of buildings in the Middle Ages; Modavvar Dome is no exception. In addition to Modavvar Dome itself, there is a decagonal dome attributed to the mother of Hulagu Khan the Mongol (the grandson of Genghis Khan and the founder of the Ilkhanate dynasty) behind it at a distance of 12 meters.

Maragheh and its domes are one of the most historical and spectacular places in Iran. Make sure you visit Modavvar Dome; A glory of the golden era of the history of Islam and Iran in the Middle Ages!!!
