Azerbaijan Museum

If you are eager to see works from 7000 years ago to contemporary periods, Azerbaijan Museum, situated in the city of Tabriz and adjecent to the Blue Mosque, is one of the best options. This museum, which is ranked second in terms of ancient importance after the National Museum of Iran, hosts some of the most special ancient objects in the world.

The History of Azerbaijan Museum

During the years of Reza Shah Pahlavi's rule, the activity of European historians and archaeologists, especially the French, was very noticaeble in Iran. Andre Godard, a famous French archaeologist, is one of these prestigious experts, whose works include the design of the most important museums in Iran, such as National Museum of Iran(Tehran), Azerbaijan(Tabriz), Hafiziyah (Shiraz) and Iranshahr School(Yazd).

The project of the museum was started under his supervision in 1306 AH as the numismatic exhibition. Gradually the museum was completed and started to work officially in 1341 AH(during the reign of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi).

What Will We See in the Museum?

The museum is built in a beautiful garden with a brick building, modern interior decoration and three floors. The coin exhibition, which is the main section of the museum, is located on the ground floor. In addition, the works dating back to ancient and prehistoric era can be seen on this floor. In the basement, objects from the 20th century, including sculptures, petroglyphs, modern art, etc. are on the exhibit.

Finally, on the first floor, you can see works from Islamic Iran, especially from the 4th and 5th centuries of Hijra. All kinds of rhytons, golden cups, golden and silver tools and equipment, 7,000 year-old serpentine stones, stone and metal sculptures, ornaments, etc, are some of the must-see items in this museum.
