Lake Urmia

The largest lake in Iran, the largest salt lake in the Middle East and the border between two provinces of East and West Azerbaijan is Lake Urmia. This lake is not only a geological phenomenon, but a family member of all Iranians, which unfortunately has become a sadness for Iran.

Name and History

It is interesting to know that the shores of Lake Urmia are the primary residences of the Parsian and Median peoples. Historians and geographers have given different names to this lake throughout history; Chichast (in Avesta), Blue Sea, Shoor Shahi, Rezaiyeh (attributed to Reza Shah Pahlavi), Urmia (its current name) and etc. All texts have spoken about the high salinity of the water; Alexander the Great, IlKhanates, Arabs, Turks of west of the Caspian Sea and many others are among those who drank the water of the lake.

How is the Environment of the Lake?

In terms of the size and concentration of water salt, only the Great Salt Lake of Utah in the United States can be compared with Urmia Lake. This salt concentration has created a very unique and special ecosystem; Pelicans, flamingos, storks, Gull, etc. are among the animals living outside the lake, and the habitat inside the lake is extremely special. Although no type of fish can live in it, crustaceans called Artemia are found in abundance in the water.

Gradual Drying of the Lake

Unfortunately, the decrease in water input from the rivers and global warming have caused the lake level to drop and thus exposed to destruction. Many efforts have been made by the government and international institutions to revive the lake.

Lake Urmia is a precious heritage of nature. Check it out as soon as possible !!!
