Narenjestan Qavam

Narenjestan Ghavam, which is also called Ghavam Garden and the exterior of Ghavam, is one of the historical monuments of Shiraz in the old neighborhood of Balakft.

This building is located in the eastern part of the end of Lotfali Khan Zand Street. Ali Mohammad Khan Ghavam-ol-Molk II started its construction and in 1305 AH, its construction was completed by his son Mohammad Reza Khan Ghavam-ol-Molk.This garden, which was the seat of Qavam al-Mulk, is known as "Naranjestan" (garden of oranges) because of the many orange trees that are planted in it.

The area of Narenjestan is 3085 square meters and it has buildings on three sides: north, east and south. On the south side, which overlooks the street, there is a beautiful entrance porch, which is the main axis of the garden and mansion. This entrance is decorated with a brick facade on the exterior and its red stone inscription shows the date of construction of the building as 1305. The carvings on both sides of the entrance gate show the role of two Qajar soldiers. The plastered wall of the porches is separated from the surface by a stone plinth covered with white and blue tile pieces.

Narenjestan Qavam complex

The collection of this space has been used as the court house of the government and the waiting space as well as the residence of the crew. A corridor and several rooms have been built on both sides of the entrance hall.In the middle of the courtyard, there is a fountain with two flower gardens on either side, and orange, palm and cypress trees surround both sides of the middle axis.At the end of the path, a water basin is located in front of the north building, so that it is reflected from the front of the porch and the mansion.

The North Building, which was the main and important mansion of Narenjestan and the place where government guests are received, is very important from an artistic point of view. plastering, mirror work, painting, tiling, brickwork and inlay work are unique in their kind. The mansion has three floors, one of which is built in the basement and the second floor is about two meters above the ground. In the middle, there is a large hall with two solid stone pillars in front of it. In the northern part of the hall, there is a royal residence, all the walls and ceiling of which are mirrored and painted, and the floor of the room is covered with marble. On both sides of the hall, there is a corridor that is connected to the third floor by a staircase. On both sides of the corridor, two halls have been built and behind them is a porch and several rooms. The body and ceiling of all rooms are plastered and painted. There are also two rooms on the floor with exquisite paintings on wooden beams called "Marjuk" in the local language. The plinths of the halls are covered with marble and all the doors are made of walnut wood and are inlaid and wood carved. On the edges of the ceilings and some of the walls, wallpaper and color photographs have been used, which were brought to Iran from Europe at that time.In the entrance of the mansion, there are three tiles that show the middle part of the two lions holding a piece of writing. It is written: "My victory is from God and victory is close to us" and two angels from above have taken it.The two chambers pictured on either side show a leopard hunting a deer and tearing it apart. The paintings are decorated with Islamic lines. The paintings on the ceiling of the large porch and most of the rooms were done by Lotfali Khan, a prominent painter of that time. The exterior of Ghavam or Naranjestan was connected to the interior (the house of Zinat al-Muluk) by a tunnel.

Narenjestan, which had long been the residence of the Ghavam family, was ceded to Shiraz University by Ibrahim Ghavam in the 1940s, and for a long time the office of the Asian Institute of Shiraz University was headed by Arthur Abraham Pope, an American Iranologist.Pope also turned it into the Narenjestan Ghavam Museum by exhibiting objects and antiques he had collected during his research trips from all over Iran.Narenjestan was restored after the Islamic Revolution and was used for some time as the Faculty of Art and Architecture of Shiraz University and is now visited by tourists as a museum.Narenjestan Ghavam was registered in the list of national monuments of Iran in May 1975 with the number 1073.
