Tang-e Chogan
A lot of information and news from ancient Iran is not left. But among the governments of that time, the Sassanid era is considered an exception;
Because both the information of Muslim historians and the many petroglyphs that have remained have made us have a clear picture of the 430 years of their rule. One of the places where we see very important petroglyphs is Tang-e Chogan, 130 km from Shiraz in Fars province, which is not only a gallery of the splendor of the Sassanid kings, but also a 1700-year-old place for the royal family to play and have fun.
Let's go and play with the royal family.
Where is Tang-e Chogan and how should we reach it?
To reach the ancient Iran stadium, you have to go from Shiraz (the capital of Fars province) to the city of Kazeroon. After that, move from Kazeroon to the city of Qaemiyeh. After 6 km you will reach Tang-e Chogan. Of course, the path to Tang-e Chogan from the main road is dirt and you have to walk a bit.
Why is it called Tang-e Chogan?
According to news and historical information, this place was built in the vicinity of the old city of Bishabur, and was used as a resort by the Sassanid kings and members of the royal family. One of the royal pastimes in ancient Iran was polo, and for this reason, as well as being located between two mountains, it is called Tang-e Chogan.
Historical attractions of Tang-e Chogun:
There are very important historical monuments here; Inside the Shahpour Cave (located on the mountain overlooking Tang-e Chogan), there is a 7-meter-high stone statue of Shapur I of Sassanid with an age of more than 1600 years. Also, in the surrounding rocks, a total of 6 petroglyphs from the Sassanid period have been left, each of which shows a part of the important events of the Sassanid period, of which we give a summary:
1- The first petroglyph shows a picture of Shapur I's glorious victory over 3 Roman emperors (Gordianus-Valerian-Philip the Arab). In this picture, a number of Iranian soldiers have also captured Roman prisoners. This petroglyph with the carvings of 115 people is considered the record owner of Iranian petroglyphs.
2- The second petroglyph, like the first one, depicts the victory of Shapur I over the Roman emperors. A child is also flying above them.
3- Shapur I's victory over 3 Roman emperors shook the ancient world. For this reason, the third petroglyph also depicts the story of this war. With the difference that the surrender of Philip the arab and the officers of the Roman army to the Sassanid king and the commanders of the Iranian army is the main subject of it.
4- The fourth petroglyph includes the scene of Bahram II's victory over the rebels. Bahram, with a long beard and hair and a winged crown on his head, is wearing a tight bodice and loose pants. Behind him, 3 Arab nobles along with 3 other people are wearing a long cloak and have presented gifts such as horses and camels as offerings.
5- In the fifth petroglyph, Bahram II is sitting on the throne and the courtiers are standing next to him. The interesting point is the presence of an elephant behind the king.
6- In the sixth and last petroglyph, the coronation ceremony and also the victory of Bahram I in the war with the Romans are shown. This one is considered one of the most beautiful and complete petroglyphs of the Sasanian period, which has a very artistic engraving. Wrinkles, clothes, etc. are displayed in a unique way. In this one, everything is wonderfully proportioned, and even the details of the horse's body and the veins on its legs are shown.
The playground of Sassanid kings and an exhibition of the glory and might of ancient Iran is the only suitable title for Tang-e Chogan!!!
