Sang Eshkanan Cave

Sang Eshkanan Cave located in Jahrom city and Fars province that belongs to Safavid era. The distance of this cave to Jahrom city is three kilometers and to Shiraz is 193 kilometers.

Sang Eshkanan cave is located on the northern slope of Alborz mountain in the south of Jahrom city at an altitude of 1091 meters above sea level. Sang Eshkanan Cave is a collection of openings and columns that are seen as cross corridors. These corridors are formed by the extraction and exploitation of white limestone and dolomitic rocks and it is known as the largest artificial cave in the world. The length of the cave is about 350 meters and its width is 150 meters, with an area of about four hectares and a height of three to four meters, which at the end it reaches less than one meter. At the site of the cave, several layers have been identified from floor to ceiling; At the bottom of the cave there are brown dolomites, then there are milky and gray limestones with a thickness of more than 4 meters, which have been extracted in most parts. The remaining columns are mostly in this layer. The cave has a pleasant and cool weather in summer due to the lack of sunlight and the existence of numerous corridors in which the wind is channeled and becomes a natural cooler. Its floor is sloping and its surface is covered with soft layers of calcareous soils. There is a layer of dolomite more than 5 meters thick on the roof of the cave and then there are three more layers of dolomite up to the ridge. Stones extracted from this cave have been used in the old houses of Jahrom, the historical house of the martyrs of Ishraq Jahromi, the house of Toofan, the house of Agha Reza Koohkan Jahromi, the old mosque of Shiraz, the new mosque of Shiraz, the shrine of Ahmad Ibn Musa, the garden of Eram, the National Central Bank of Shiraz, Imamzadeh Ismail Jahrom, Khan Jahrom seminary, Shiraz prayer hospital, Larestan gendarmerie, etc.
