Shahcheragh Holy Shrine

Iran is considered the most important base of the Shia religion in the Islamic world, which constitutes the second largest group of Muslims.

For this reason, there are many holy Shrines in Iran, including Shahcheragh Holy Shrine (brother of the 8th Shiite Imam) located in Shiraz (the capital of Fars province),  which is considered the largest mosque in the city and one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in this country.

Who is Shahcheragh and why was his shrine built in Shiraz?

In the government of al-Ma'mun, the eighth Imam of Shiites was appointed as the crown prince and settled in Khorasan. His brother, Shahcheragh, went to Khorasan during a trip from Iraq, but on the way, the troops of the Abbasid Caliph destroyed the house where he was staying and martyred him and he was buried there. But 300  years later, during the Salghurids, they built a shrine on Shahcheragh's grave. 100  years later, the queen of Fars (Abish Khatun) renovated and restored the shrine and increased its area.

In addition, she also built a school and shops next to the shrine and dedicated it. After the coming of the Safavid dynasty (Shia religion), more attention was paid to this shrine, and after that, changes have been made in it regularly until today.

Of course, it should be said that this place was completely destroyed by earthquakes about 200  and 300  years ago, but it was rebuilt. Today, this shrine is a place of pilgrimage for Shiites all over the world.

Architecture of Shahcheragh Shrine:

The building of the building includes a porch in front and a wide shrine behind the porch, which has four thrones on the four sides of it, and a mosque has also been built behind the shrine (west side). The grave is located in alcove under the dome. The columns of the porch were built in the style of the Safavid era and covered with iron and wood, and the minarets were all decorated with turquoise tiles.

In the interior, wonderful decorations have been made with the help of calligraphy, painting, mirror work, inlay work, large and beautiful lamps, as well as gold and silver work on the walls, which will captivate your eyes.

Religion, art and architecture are connected in Shahcheragh. When visiting Shiraz, don't forget it.
