Saint Mary Church of Tehran
From a long time until now, due to the special geographical position of Iran, which is located in the cradle of civilization and religion of the world, i.e. the Middle East, followers of different religions have been present in this country.
In almost the entire history of Iran, there has been a peaceful coexistence between the followers of religions. One of these religions, which can be said to have always been respected by Iranians and considered a very popular minority, are Christians. Most Christians in Iran are Armenians who were driven from their land for various reasons and have made Iran their refuge and place of residence. Because of this presence, many churches have been built all over Iran, one of the newest and most attractive of them is Saint Mary Church of Tehran which we will introduce to you in this article.
What do you know about the construction of Saint Mary Church?
During the period of Reza Shah Pahlavi, due to the increase in the Armenian population of Tehran, the need to build many churches was felt. For this purpose, Armenian benefactors have borne the cost of building the church and asked Nikolai Markov (a famous Russian architect) to design the plan and build the church. He started the construction of the church in 1936 and finished it in 1937. From that time until today, this church has been a gathering place for Armenian compatriots and in 2002, it was registered in Iran National Heritage List.
Church architecture:
One of the most interesting points of the construction of the church is that both the internal and external plans are designed in the shape of a cross. The entire church has an area of 560 square meters and is modeled on the architecture of medieval Armenian churches. In addition, Byzantine, Georgian and Russian architectural elements can be seen in it.
A twelfth square dome with entrances of light has been built on top of the main hall or the prayer hall, and there are two entrances in the east and west to enter the prayer hall. The materials used are stone, cement and brick, and the interior of the church is painted with grayish-white basalt color, which evokes a sense of purity and peace. Also, very beautiful paintings with religious themes can be seen on all the internal columns.
The Saint Mary Church of Tehran is a sign of the peaceful life of followers of different religions in Iran!!!
